The purpose of Angela and Maurice Becker Memorial Scholarship at York College was established in the loving memory of Angela and Maurice Becker. The award will provide financial aid to a York College student who was adopted, has adopted a child, or is currently in a foster home. 
  • Full-time student (Must be registered for at least 12 credits)
  • Must have a GPA of 2.80 or higher.

AKA HBCU Scholarship

The purpose of the AKA HBCU Scholarship fund is to support York scholars in financial need. The student should show a commitment to academic success.  
 

Eligibility Criteria

  • Preference will be given to students who have demonstrated experience in or commitment to working with historically underserved or marginalized populations.

  • Must have a GPA of 2.50 or higher

Smaller awards may be made for non-traditional financial support for expenses beyond tuition, including books, transportation, food, healthcare, and other college-related expenses (maximum $250 each).

The Mary McLeod Bethune Scholarship is awarded to a

graduating high school senior who intends to pursue a

baccalaureate degree at a four-year college or university. 

 

BACKGROUND


This scholarship honors Mary McLeod Bethune who was an

extraordinary educator dedicated to public service.

She founded the National Council of Negro Women and

Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach, Florida.

In addition to being an educator and an organizer,

Mrs. Bethune was also a political activist. She was the

first African American woman to be involved in the White

House, assisting four different US presidents. Mary McLeod

Bethune was also a leader in the Black Women's Club

Movement, served as president of the National Association

of Colored Women, and vice president of the NAACP.

 

SCHOLARSHIP AMOUNT

The award is in the amount of $1,000 per semester, based on availability of funds.
 

SELECTION CRITERIA

To be considered for the scholarship, the applicant must:

  1. Be a student of African descent residing within our area of service (as explained below).

  2. Live within our service area: Manhattan east to west from the East River to the Hudson River and north to south from 155th Street to Battery Park.

  3. Be a graduating high school senior and have a B average (80 out of 100, 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale).

  4. Participate in an extra-curricular activity and/or have a part-time job. 

  5. Demonstrate volunteerism (i.e., caregiver for a family member, teach Sunday school, clothing drive, volunteer at a community or nonprofit organization, etc.).

  6. Be admitted to a Baccalaureate Degree program at an accredited institution by the fall semester 2025. Proof of registration from an official office will be required.

Each year, the Brooklyn Alumnae Chapter provides thousands of dollars in scholarship awards to qualified high school and college students who reside in the borough of Brooklyn. Most of our awards are renewable, four-year scholarships for those enrolled as full-time students with grade point averages of 2.5 each semester based on a 4.0 system, or its equivalent.*

Brooklyn Alumnae Chapter administers five different types of scholarships/awards (see below) to which York students are only eligible for three. An applicant who is selected as a candidate to receive an award must attend a virtual interview conducted by the Scholarship Committee, and provide proof of immigration status either as a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.



Brooklyn Alumnae Chapter Scholarship - a four-year continuous scholarship for Brooklyn residents, ranging from $1,000.00 to $2,000.00 per year.  Applicants must be enrolled as a full-time student in a four-year college or university.  Eligibility is based on maintaining a minimum 2.5 GPA for each semester. 

Beverly Vance Memorial Scholarship - a $1,000.00 renewable award for Brooklyn residents seeking a four-year degree with a major in CommunicationsSpeech, Drama, or a related field of study.  Continuous eligibility is based on a full-time study with a minimum 2.5 GPA for each semester.  Applicant must be an entering freshman student.   

Angela M. Bledsoe Scholarship - a $1,000.00 annual renewable award for Brooklyn residents seeking a four-year degree with a major in Business and/or Finance. Continuous eligibility is based on full-time study with a minimum 2.50 GPA for each semester.

Dr. Yves Roseus, an esteemed York College Alumnus and Adjunct Assistant Professor with the Department of Occupational Therapy, led a life dedicated to service and advocacy. In addition to his dedication to the York College community, he was Senior Occupational Therapist at Brookdale Hospital. He also served on the Roster of Accreditors for ACOTE, and was a Board Member of NYSOTA and NYSBOTC. His commitment to service and advocacy also helped to establish an occupational therapy program in Haiti. The Dr. Yves Roseus Citizen's Award at York College has been established in loving memory of Dr. Roseus's dedication and commitment to service and advocacy.

The award will provide financial support to a York College Occupational Therapy student who demonstrates outstanding commitment to service and advocacy in the community and occupational therapy.

Levin Scholarship for Excellence in the Sciences



Dr. Eugene Levin (1934-2004), a charter faculty member of York College, was a popular and highly respected Professor of Physics. To honor his memory, the Levin family has established the Professor Eugene Levin Scholarship for Excellence in the Science (Levin Scholarship). The purpose of this scholarship is to provide aid to students who have made a commitment to the sciences.

The Legacy Scholarship Program of the National Association of Puerto Rican Hispanic Social Workers (NAPRHSW) is designed to support and empower graduate-level students pursuing careers in social work, mental health, and human services. The program honors the legacy of past leaders while fostering the next generation of professionals committed to serving Latino communities.
 
Recipients, known as Visionaries, will receive a $1,000 scholarship to help further their academic and professional journeys. In addition to financial support, each Visionary will participate in the Training Program, a virtual two-day intensive focused on essential skills in direct service, community organizing, leadership, policy, and program development.
 
Through this experience, Visionaries will gain valuable knowledge and hands-on training to become effective change agents in their communities. They will also engage in a year-long mentorship program with seasoned professionals in their field, receiving guidance and support for their personal and professional growth.
 
As part of their commitment, Visionaries will serve as liaisons between NAPRHSW and their universities, organizing a forum where NAPRHSW board members can engage with students and further the association’s mission.
The Legacy Scholarship Program is a unique opportunity for emerging leaders to gain the skills, knowledge, and connections to make a lasting impact in the Latino community.

Initially, the endowment will help fund the education of one MSW student with demonstrated interest, or experience working in, rural settings and/or health and mental health in African American communities.

  • Patty Gibbs- Wahlberg Scholarship - This award recognizes student scholarship, service, and leadership. Awards of $3,000, $2,000, and $1,000 are presented each year.
  • Student Leadership Award - These awards recognize outstanding student leadership consistent with the ideals and missions of Phi Alpha. The focus of the application is the student’s leadership, service, impact, and commitment. The awards are $1,000 for first
    place, $750 for second place, and $500 for third place. Students must be active leaders of Phi Alpha and nominated by their chapter advisor.
  • Chapter Grants - These grants promote and support chapters’ engagement in service learning. Pomilla Award for Science Teaching



This award honors Dr. Frank Pomilla, Emeritus Professor of Physics and founding member of York College. He was the first chair of the original Department of Natural Sciences. He retired from York in 1992.

His children, with the assistance of colleagues and friends, have established this award in honor of Dr. Pomilla's love of and dedication to York College and its students.

The Melanie Foundation was created in 2006 to honor the life and legacy of Melanie Merola O’Donnell, with the mission to foster support for mental health issues. Melanie lived a life of giving, focusing her career on relieving suffering inflicted by mental illness. Melanie died at the age of 33 while in the midst of doctoral studies in psychology. Her family and friends subsequently collaborated to bring The Melanie Foundation to life, with the initial goal of providing scholarships to people who had the best chance of extending Melanie’s legacy.
